Online search giant Google Inc has moved into the retailing space for the first time with the introduction of a new Android phone called Nexus One

Online search giant Google Inc has moved into the retailing space for the first time with the introduction of a new Android phone called Nexus One. Billed as a super-smart phone, the Nexus One is being positioned as a device to directly compete with Apple’s iPhone and Research in Motion’s BlackBerry.

Google’s new phone has been built to its specifications by HTC of Taiwan. Google’s Mario Queiroz said the new Android device is easily a “super phone” and called it the finest example of the web meeting the phone.

Nexus One is a sleek device with dimensions of 119 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm. It weighs just about 130 grams including the battery. It boasts of a 3.7-inch widescreen WVGA AMOLED touchscreen along with 100,000:1 typical contrast ratio.

Powered by the Qualcomm QSD 8250 1 GHz, the Google Nexus One runs on the Android Mobile Technology Platform 2.1. It has an internal memory of 512 MB along with 512 MB flash memory. Overall the phone’s capacity is 4 GB with a Micro SD card expandable up to 32 GB.

The Nexus One has a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and autofocus. The AGPS receiver allows users to include the location of the photographs. The phone has the ability to capture video at 720×480 pixels at 20 frames per second or higher, depending on lighting conditions.

The Nexus One can be used for up to 5 hours to browse the Internet through 3G and for 6.5 hours through Wi-Fi.

Google will sell the unlocked version of the Nexus One direct from google.com/phone at a price of $529. Users opting to buy from T-Mobile will have to pay $179 and sign a two-year contract that costs $79.99 a month.

Last week saw whole of the Internet buzzing with rumors of an imminent announcement of a price cut by Sony. While they have been finally found true, the news is not what the hardcore games had hoped for, a price cut for a still expensive PlayStation 3.

Instead, Sony is looking to provide its PlayStation 2 console a final boost in sales by slashing its price by more than 25 percent to $99.99. Sony’s director of hardware marketing, John Koller said that the company is encouraged to see the PS2 continue to report healthy sales (more than 131,000 units sold in February according to NPD) and promised that the number of games available for the console will hit the 1900 mark by the end of the year.

One of the major objectives for the price cut seems to be the extra customers that it can bring with Sony hoping to tempt people who are looking for a cheaper form of entertainment in the current economic climate.

Released in 2000, PlayStation 2 has become the most popular console in use today with latest figures from NPD revealing that more than 50 million units have been sold in North American alone.

Sony is struggling to beat Microsoft in the console race with sales steadily dropping. Though PlayStation 3 posted its highest month-on-month rise during February with more than 276,000 units sold, it is still lagging far behind Xbox 360 which managed to sell 391,000 units during the same period.
