8GB Chinavasion Multimedia Watch; lots of features, still looks ultra-geeky

With the continuing price drop for precious flash memory, it was only a matter of time until a product such as this was released; an 8GB Multimedia watch with the ability to play MP3s, video files, and also display JPEG photos. And as if those three features weren’t enough, the Ultimate Style 8GB Steel MP4 Player Watch also has a built-in voice recorder, support for multiple OSD languages, “high-quality” speakers, and a 1.8-inch color screen. Could this finally be the picture of convergence? Honestly?
Judging from the looks of it, one can easily see that it’s made of shiny, stainless steel. What’s hard to figure out is how they managed to cram all 8GB’s of memory, the color display, built-in speakers AND a functional watch inside it. Well, I guess an “effort to always bring you the latest and greatest from China” can really make a company do just those things, and this case is not an exception. The 8GB Chinavasion Multimedia Watch also supports standard headphones via the 3.5mm headphone jack, it has a built-in mic to accommodate voice recordings, and it can play video at an astonishing 20 frames per second (read: semi-high quality). “What more could you ask of such a beautiful looking watch?,” asks Chinavasion. Well, how about cheapness? It seems they have that covered too, the watch retails for a measly $86.
If you ask me, this actually goes against the convergence concept, since its another product that you’ll have to carry around with you. But when you consider that you don’t actually carry this thing, but instead wear it, in a sense its case could be passable. And I believe this has been the best use of a flash drive on an MP3 player watch by far, bar none. I would say shame on the funky square look, but in all fairness I have yet to see a video watch that really looked cool.
